Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), U.S. Department of Energy:
Physical Security Assessment Program
As one of the largest multi-state electric transmission utilities, WAPA required a robust enterprise security program across 300+ sites. iParametrics was awarded a multi-year contract to ensure the physical security and resilience of infrastructure transmitting over 30 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually.
Given what I know today about the contractor’s ability to perform in accordance with this contract / order’s most significant requirements, I would highly recommend them for similar requirements in the future.
– Utility Contracting Officer
Situation
Spanning 15 central and western states, WAPA’s 17,000+ circuit-mile transmission system was vulnerable to natural and man-made threats. To safeguard over $4B in assets and sustain service to 40M+ consumers, WAPA initiated a comprehensive security evaluation.
Task
iParametrics was tasked with performing physical security and risk assessments, evaluating policies and systems at transmission lines, substations, generation sites, and administrative facilities. The objective was to enhance resilience and define cost-effective security upgrades.
Action
Our team assessed physical vulnerabilities and electronic systems, conducted BES-level risk reviews, and delivered parametric system designs with cost estimates. We collaborated across federal and utility stakeholders, aligning recommendations with regulatory guidance.
Result
All work was completed on time and within budget. WAPA received top-tier performance ratings (“very good to exceptional”) and used iParametrics’ roadmap to drive future investment decisions. The engagement was praised by WAPA’s contracting officer for its quality and execution.
