New Mexico Educational Retirement Board:
Fraud Risk Assessment
The New Mexico Educational Retirement Board (NMERB) partnered with iParametrics to assess fraud vulnerabilities within its systems for handling sensitive member and retiree data. The engagement aimed to enhance internal safeguards, detect risks, and improve the agency’s fraud prevention posture through a methodical, expert-led evaluation.
Situation
NMERB faced potential internal and external fraud risks due to outdated protocols and growing data security concerns. With complex data handling processes and broad employee access, the agency needed an independent review to ensure compliance and mitigate exposure.
Task
iParametrics was tasked with conducting a comprehensive fraud risk assessment, including system audits, access reviews, policy evaluation, and stakeholder interviews. Success meant identifying vulnerabilities, recommending updates, and delivering actionable insight for leadership decision-making.
Action
We deployed a Certified Fraud Examiner, reviewed workflows, audited user activity logs, and assessed both physical and digital safeguards. A formal gap analysis informed our prioritized recommendations, which were delivered via a written report and in-person briefing. These included updates to multi-factor authentication, override approvals, and routine monitoring protocols.
Result
iParametrics helped NMERB detect an active fraud case during the review, enabling immediate remediation. Our work led to strengthened access controls, updated employee protocols, and improved alignment with best practices—protecting retiree data and reinforcing organizational integrity.
