Multi-Campus Hazard Mitigation Plan Update

In early 2023, Tufts University decided to undertake an update to its Multi-Campus Hazard Mitigation Plan. Tufts University is a prestigious research university with four campuses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The University educates approximately 13,000 students each year and employs over 5,000 faculty and staff.

Situation

Tufts University aimed to strengthen climate resilience by updating its Multi-Campus Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP). With each campus facing distinct hazards and institutional cultures, the university sought a unified, strategic plan to reduce disaster costs and enhance long-term preparedness.

Task

iParametrics was selected to lead the HMP update in compliance with FEMA standards and the Disaster Mitigation Act. Key responsibilities included stakeholder engagement, risk analysis for each campus, and the integration of workshop input into a cohesive, university-wide mitigation strategy.

Action

Our team facilitated collaborative planning sessions, performed detailed campus-specific risk assessments, and engaged faculty, staff, and students across all four campuses. We developed a data-driven, future-ready plan aligned with Tufts’ goals, supported by a highly participatory and tailored planning approach.

Result

The updated plan was approved by MEMA and FEMA and officially adopted by Tufts in November 2024. The project fostered cross-campus coordination, enabling Tufts to transition from siloed efforts to a unified mitigation framework for long-term risk reduction.
